Ich muss wieder hinaus auf die See, hinaus in die einsame Ferne,
brauch' nur ein stolzes Schiff und den Weg mir weisende Sterne,
und des Ruders Zerren und des Winds Gesang und der Segel Knallen und Schwellen
und am frühen Morgen das Nebelgrau auf den milchig tanzenden Wellen.

Ich muss wieder hinaus auf die See, weil keiner dem Ruf widersteht,
dem lauten unmissverständlichen Ruf, der von den Fluten her weht;
brauch' nur einen Wind, der die Wolken jagt, und der brodelnden Wogen Gespei
und die Fontänen der sprühenden Gischt und der Möwen schrilles Geschrei.

Ich muss dringend hinaus auf die See, in die Freiheit wieder einmal,
hinaus in die Weite bei Wind und Wetter, begleitet von Möwe und Wal,
brauch' nur einen fröhlichen Kumpel, der lustiges Seemannsgarn spinnt,
und ruhigen Schlaf und süßen Traum, wenn der Rausch schließlich zerrinnt.
